This week’s Torah portion, Pinchas, continues where last week’s portion ended. The Moabites followed the advice of the prophet Bilam and sent women among the Children of Israel to tempt them. Phineas boldly confronted the evil in the midst of the camp and was rewarded with a covenant of peace. The Lubavitcher Rebbe taught that Phineas was prepared to sacrifice himself for his people, which was fitting as they prepared to enter the land of Israel. Join Shmuel for an in-depth look at Portion Pinchas. Shabbat Shalom!
Shalom Shmuel! I don’t see where Phinehas put his life on the line, unless you feel that there was a chance that Moshe and Aaron would have him killed because he committed murder.
Now, Father told the people, Yisraelites and Goyim, that if they obey and keep His mitzvot, they will have shalom (peace, wellness wholeness completeness and prosperity) in the Land that He will give them. So the sacrifice would be to give up selfish behavior which is contrary to Father’s Torah.
This sacrifice was required of the 1st man and woman in the garden of Eden. Life or death was placed before our first forefathers in the beginning.
