GIVING PIONEERS FRESH WATER
Twenty-three years ago, on the eve of Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), Elisha Medan, who was preparing to complete his stint of service in the IDF, took on a new mission with several friends in defense of the Land and People of Israel. They decided to establish a new community in the southern Hebron Hills, a region where Arabs had been seizing more and more land. Elisha and his friends parked an old bus on a plot of land facing Maon, the ancient site where the heroic Biblical figure Avigayil had dwelled, and that moment, the new community of “Avigayil” was born.
Since Avigayil’s founding, the community has persevered in the face of daunting challenges. Isolated and surrounded by large Arab villages and cities, Avigayil’s residents must always be on alert for security threats. Established under pioneering conditions, Avigayil largely comprises temporary structures and underdeveloped utilities. However, in September of 2023, Avigayil received great news! Finally, after 22 years, the government has ensured the community that it will upgrade its infrastructure, including water and electricity, and will authorize construction of permanent homes.
Unfortunately, Avigayil still suffers terribly from inadequate water and electricity. While the government is now ultimately responsible for providing Avigayil with critical infrastructure, Avigayil still needs a central smart water monitoring system to ensure maximum efficiency and a minimal loss of water from a system breakdown. The Hebron Hills Regional Council has contributed towards this effort, but Avigayil needs additional funds to complete the project on its own.
