PIONEERING THROUGH ART
The residents and families of Tekoa, a community located just south of Jerusalem, stand out as a unique brand of pioneers in the Biblical Heartland. Recognizing art to be a tool for self-refinement and for establishing connections with others. The pioneers of Tekoa have heavily invested in the trade as a source for resilience, hope and livelihood.
The Tekoa Art Center, which opened five years ago, is truly a gem with artists’ studios and spaces for live performances. Thanks to support from CFOIC Heartland, the art center successfully hosted art exhibits for two years in its Madeleine Greenwald Art Gallery and recently secured government recognition with the promise of ongoing support for regular art exhibits. A contemporary lobby leads to the art gallery where visitors can savor unique works of art on display by residents and visiting artists.
In order to accommodate the growing number of visitors and the full range of art exhibits, there is a desperate need to repair and refurbish the existing space. The doors are falling apart and the ceiling and floor must be replaced. Additionally, funds are needed to complete the development of the outdoor area for events and workshops, including a pergola. Youths from broken families are helping to construct the entire outdoor area and are also participating in the necessary landscaping and gardening work. While undoubtedly an empowering and therapeutic experience for the youth, the project cannot be completed without more funds.
