How are people coping in Israel?

Dear Friends,

I feel compelled to write to you today because I cannot remain silent at this time.

Just a couple of weeks ago, I received a heart-wrenching phone call from someone living in one of the communities of Samaria. He shared with me the painful truth of his economic struggles, telling me that he was finding it difficult to provide even the most basic needs for his family. His words struck me deeply, as they reminded me that amidst all the serious situations and crises around us, there are still people in our midst who struggle daily just to put food on the table.

It’s easy to focus on the large-scale emergencies that demand our attention, and those are indeed crucial. But we must not forget that there are families—our neighbours—who are dealing with the simple, yet profound challenge of survival.

As the high holidays approach, we are called to give charity and support those in need. In our prayers, especially during this season of change and reflection, we are reminded of the three pillars that can alter our fate: repentance, prayer, and charity. Charity holds a special place, for it embodies the essence of giving and sharing. When we bless others, God, in turn, blesses us. Just as my sons act generously, I respond with generosity toward them. God promises to bless those who give and guide them to a better place.

In the Book of Nehemiah, chapter 8, verse 10, we read about an ancient celebration of Rosh Hashanna , where we are instructed to rejoice and share with those in need. Our happiness, our joy, cannot be complete when those around us are struggling. How can we sit at our holiday tables knowing that others are going without?

This year, I am asking you, our friend and partner to bless a family who is in need of the most basic essentials. By providing food for their table, you can bring comfort and hope to their holidays, showing them that they are not forgotten, that someone cares.

The joy and smiles around their table will be the blessings you give, and in return, may God bless you with a year filled with joy, happiness, and security.

I recently interviewed Anat Safrir, who heads up the Samaria Family Assistance program. This organization helps Samaria residents who are in need. In the interview below Anat shares her heart and her concerns for the many families who are struggling. Please donate generously today to help purchase food vouchers for a family this holiday season.

Wishing you all a happy and meaningful New Year

Blessings,
