The Bible commands the Israelites to sound the Shofar on the first day of the seventh month (Numbers 29). And indeed, Jews have been celebrating the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah on that day for thousands of years, a day alternately known as the Feast of Trumpets. And the Shofar is a central part of the prayers and celebration of the day
The Jewish New Year ushers in a month-long time of Biblical Feasts, culminating in the week-long Feast of Tabernacles. While that holiday is a time of great rejoicing for Jews all over the world, there are families who are hard-pressed to provide food for their families throughout the year.
