Over 3,700 years ago, the esteemed man who would become the father of many nations took his first steps on a path that would not only shape his destiny, but also that of his descendants and the world at large. Shortly after being bereaved of his father in the ancient city of Haran, this Biblical patriarch, who was then known as Abram, heard a calling from God to “go forth” to a land yet to be revealed to him. With full faith and trust in God, Abram continued a journey that had begun all the way back in the Sumerian city of Ur Kasdim, the home of his upbringing.
Following God’s direction and guidance, Abram and his entire entourage including his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and the many souls he had brought to monotheism arrived in the Land of Canaan, the exact destination that Abram and his father had originally set out for. The very first landmark Abram encountered in the land was Mount Kabir, located in the plain of Moreh (Genesis 12:6). It was there that God appeared to Abram and made him an everlasting promise: “To your offspring I will give this Land!” (Genesis 12:7). In immediate response, Abram built an altar to God, demonstrating his gratitude and devotion to God.

Only several centuries later would it become most apparent that there was perhaps no more fitting place for God to have first appeared to Abram and promise him the land. Just several mountains away, and within sight of Mount Kabir, Joshua, the disciple of Moses, conducted a covenantal ceremony on Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal, binding Abram’s descendants, the Children of Israel, to the very Land that God had shown him (Joshua 8:30–35). In this day and age, while bearing witness to the continued restoration of the Biblical Heartland, Mount Kabir in Samaria stands as an emblematic reminder of God’s everlasting covenant with Abram! The Families Restoring the Glory of Zion
Having been a pioneer in Shadmot Mechola, an agricultural community on the northern edge of the Jordan Valley, for over a decade, Shulamit looks back on her decision to move there with a deep sense of fulfillment.
“After we moved to Israel, we searched for a place to live where we could make a difference,” Shulamit recalls. “Being part of the development of the underpopulated Jordan “Valley was the life we embraced!”
Shulamit takes particular comfort in Shadmot Mechola’s multigenerational character, with two of her own children and a married granddaughter choosing to remain in the community. Now retired, Shulamit keeps herself busy through local volunteer work, embodying a guiding value in Shadmot Mechola.

On her decision to move to Shadmot Mechola, Shulamit says, “being part of the development of the underpopulated Jordan Valley was the life we embraced!”

“The community motto is ‘a community that is family,’” she explains, noting how residents have rallied to support every family of reservists over the past few years.
“Even though so many needed help, no one was left out.”
For Shulamit, Shadmot Mechola serves not only as an idyllic setting for a home but also as a model for the nation: “I have faith in the People of Israel that such genuine goodness and care for one another will always help us prevail!”
