Shemot (Names) – Exodus 1:1 – 6:1

Welcome to the first portion of the book of Exodus! Shemot opens a new chapter in the story of the Israelites, introducing us to the remarkable figure of Moses, destined to lead his people to freedom and deliver God’s law.

Though his life begins in peril, hidden among the reeds of the Nile, it is Pharaoh’s daughter—known in the Talmud as Batya, the “daughter of God”—who defies her father’s decree to save him. Her act of compassion and courage sets the stage for Moses’ legacy of leadership and justice.

What can we learn from Pharaoh’s daughter and her bold choices? How does her example shape Moses, and how can her story inspire us today?

Thank you for joining me as we begin this powerful journey through Shemot (Exodus).

Shabbat Shalom!
